Amakasu Ōmi no Kami – Kuniyoshi

Utagawa Kuniyoshi made this portrait of the Uesugi general Amakasu Ōmi no Kami for his series One Hundred Generals, Brave at Battle, at Kawanakajima, published around 1843–45. The original woodblock shows Amakasu bareheaded, turning in profile as he raises a naginata over the battle.

Here the old print sits almost untouched on washed black, with the muted pigments and dense armor doing all the work.
