M. Butterfly

David Henry Hwang’s M. Butterfly opened on Broadway in 1988, with John Lithgow originating René Gallimard. A year later, Anthony Hopkins took over the role for the London production – shortly before The Silence of the Lambs turned him into something entirely different.

Here the entire play is reduced to a red M. and a silver butterfly. Almost nothing, but enough.
